Service Details
Household hazardous waste requires special care when being disposed and is not accepted in automated trash or recycling carts. Liquids that are considered HHW should never be poured down the drain, onto the ground, or into a storm drain.
Currently, the City of Plymouth partners with Wayne County for no-cost household hazardous waste disposal.
There are a few local companies that provide for HHW disposal/drop off for a fee. Contact them directly for location and pricing.
Included Items
Household hazardous waste is household products that can catch fire, react, or explode under certain circumstances or items that are corrosive or toxic. Examples of common household hazardous waste include aerosol cans, antifreeze, batteries, cleaners, electronics, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, mercury, motor oil, nail polish, oil-based paint, pharmaceuticals, poisons/insecticides/pesticides, smoke detectors, and varnish/stains.
Preventing Household Hazardous Waste
The easiest way to dispose of household hazardous waste is to not bring it into your home in the first place.
- Check labels before you buy. If a cautionary notice exists, the product will become HHW if not used up properly.
- Buy only what you need. Surprisingly, many products cost more to dispose of than they cost to purchase.
- Store items properly. Items that are not stored safely may become a danger to children, pets, and others. Proper storage can prolong the life of the product, which may allow it to be used up rather than thrown out.
